At ART COLOGNE 2001, Alexander Ochs achieved the first presentation of Chinese artists at a German trade fair. With the interruption of one year, he was on the Cologne art market until 2015. After the collapse of the Chinese market for European galleries, the gallery owner handed over his Beijing subsidiary WHITE SPACE to his Chinese partner Tian Yuan, who continues the company with great success. After the closure of the Berlin-Kreuzberg gallery space, Ochs was one of the first to move to Berlin – Charlottenburg, founded ALEXANDER OCHS PRIVATE and reinvented himself there again. He operates his gallery in the form of a salon on a 300-square-meter floor in a 1908 completed townhouse. “We,” according to Ochs, “liven up the tradition of the art trade of the 1920s and 30s”. And further: “… we have built global markets and come to the conviction that Contemporary Western art in East Asia is not really understood. But we are not interested in markets where one does not understand our art and our value system is not negotiable. ”

In addition to six – a wider audience accessible – exhibitions a year, the Salon regularly invites to concerts, talks and readings. This year, for the second time, a reading on the ‘Day of Book Burning’ will take place on May 10th, which will be carried by more than 30 housemates at Schillerstrasse 12 to 15. Alexander Ochs: “We are very pleased that the artists working with us are also interested in the other cultural genres and here are also active in parts.” And another special feature: the proportion of female artists is growing steadily and will soon take on a larger one Space in the program as that of their male colleagues.

At the ART COLOGNE 2019, we present three profiled female artists living in Berlin with the draftswoman Laura Bruce, the painter Bettina Scholz and the sculptor Tanja Rochelmeyer; alongside Sven Drühl, Axel Anklam and one of the ‘Stars’ in the collection of the Cologne KOLUMBA MUSEUM, the composer, painter and video artist Chris Newman.

Until the opening of this year’s edition of ART COLOGNE, ALEXANDER OCHS PRIVATE presents all the artistic positions shown in their own press texts.
